The overabundance of sunlight was driving me batty. I was jetlagged and my internal clock had given up the ghost. It was barely eight in the morning and the longest day of the year had already gone on too long.

I knocked on the door to Harper’s suite. She was there with another blond woman in the room, who was working on make-up. She looked a few years older but had similar features. I’d met her the night before, but my fatigued brain and Miss Priss had info dumped all the names that had been shoved at me the day before.

“Uh, Harper? Can I have a minute to talk with you in private?” I asked in case the other blond wasn’t in on the whole bear shifter thing.

“It’s okay, Maeve. My sister knows.” Harper said.

Mental forehead smack. Her sister. Delia or maybe Delilah? I really wasn’t firing on all cylinders.

“Sorry,” I murmured. “I forgot.”

“You’ve had a lot to cope with. I’m Denise Fenton.” She smiled and extended a hand. “It’s an honor to meet you, again.”

“You too.” And now that I knew she knew what I was and vice versa, it really felt as though we were meeting for the first time.

“Is that for me?” Harper gestured to the box I carried. I’d used a napkin I’d stolen from the dinner table and stuffed it with toilet paper, using my travel sewing kit to sew the doll shut.

“I just need a lock of your hair to finish the binding. If you are still sure this is what you want.”

Denise groaned. “Harper, you didn’t.”

Harper lifted her chin. “She was here. And she was willing.”

“You don’t just ask one of the most powerful witches ever to help you lie to your future husband,” Denise said. “It’s rude.”

“I don’t mind,” I lied.

They both looked at me with identical expressions of incredulity.

“What?” I asked.

“Shifters can smell lies, Maeve,” Denise advised.

I threw my hands up. “I was trying to be polite since it’s her wedding day and all.”

Harper bit her lip. “So you think that I’m making a mistake with the binding?”

“Okay, so I don’t mind about the binding, at all. I am happy to help you out. But I do think it’s a mistake for you not to tell the man you are about to marry what’s going on. I know, it’s not my business. But see Kal and me, we’ve been through some stuff. Complicated stuff. In the beginning, I hid what was going on from him. It made us both miserable. Keeping secrets about who you really are puts distance between the two of you. The choice is yours, but I just felt like I should share my experience.”

Denise squeezed her sister’s shoulder. “It’s up to you, but I agree with Maeve.”

“You’ve been married three times,” Harper said dryly.

“So I know very well what doesn’t work,” Denise said. “Marty’s father was the only one who knew what I was, God rest his soul. He was the only one I fully trusted and if he was still alive, I guarantee we would still be together.
